Cleaning your grout doesn’t have to be such an arduous process. Floor Coverings International Bozeman has prepared this helpful post with three great ways to clean tile grout in your Bozeman home.
Cleaning Your Grout
Whatever method you choose to use when cleaning your grout, there are a few steps to take before you begin. You’ll want to sweep your flooring to remove any loose debris and then run a hot, damp washcloth along the grout lines to get rid of any surface grime.
Before you start, you’ll also want to consider the tile that the grout surrounds. If you are cleaning around glass tile, there isn’t much to worry about, but if you’re cleaning the grout lines of a marble tile floor, you will need to choose your cleaning method more carefully. For marble, avoid using vinegar or any cleaner that is highly acidic, as this can cause staining and etching in the flooring. For natural stone floors, your best bet is to use an alkaline or high-pH cleaner. If you are ever worried about the effect that a cleaner may have on your flooring, test it out in an area that no one will see, allow it to sit for at least a day or two, and then check the area for any damage.
When you’re finished, it is a good idea to mop and sweep your floors to pick up any debris that may have come loose, as well as any residual streaks of cleaner.
If you’re cleaning grout around tile that is made from something other than natural stone, then vinegar can be a great way to accomplish that task! Prepare a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water, spray it over the grout lines, and then allow it to settle for 5-10 minutes. When the time has passed, grab a toothbrush or other small, soft brush and scrub the grout clean.
Alkaline cleaners are not acidic, which makes them great for grout-line cleaning around natural stones like marble and travertine. There are a number of store-bought alkaline cleaners available on the market. Simply follow the instructions on those bottles to properly clean your grout lines.
Baking Soda Paste
To create a baking soda paste, mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part water until the desired consistency is reached. Then with your finger or a toothbrush, apply the baking soda paste onto the grout lines. Allow the mixture to sit for a minute before wiping it up.
If you are looking for a deeper clean, you can combine this method with the vinegar spray. Simply place the baking soda paste first, spray the vinegar over top, and then wait while the two cleaners bubble up as they react to one another. After about 5 minutes clean up the grout lines and remove any excess baking soda and vinegar solution.
